What gets you excited about cherry blossom festivals? The parade, the kimonos, or the actual cherry blossoms?
Many of our designers here are big fans of Japanese ohanami cherry blossom viewing. Not only do they make cherry blossom earrings, cherry blossom necklaces, cherry blossom handbags and cherry blossom hair accessories, but their flowers are also so detailed and accurate that you’ll think, wow! these designers really know their cherry blossoms.
Are you heading to Washington D.C. in March or Tokyo in April? You might very well be seeing different cherry blossoms. Let these designers teach you a thing or two!
Yoshino cherry blossoms are what come to mind when you think about cherry blossoms. They have the signature single, pale-pink blossoms and are the most common. They are in bloom a bit earlier and make up most of the cherry trees in Washington D.C.
Identify Yoshino cherry blossoms by their single layer of petals, the signature dent at the tip of the petals and the deep pink center.
Have you seen delicate cherry blossoms trembling and dancing in the breeze? The dangling stone on these brooches accentuates those dances. To the Japanese people, every expression of cherry blossoms is worth celebrating.
Each of these cherry blossom earring refers to a specific variety of cherry blossom—and Japanese confection (wagashi). You can see that the designer, Tama, is very serious about her cherry blossoms.
You can also take out the colors and appreciate the pure form of the blossoms.

If you want to be very specific, know that some cross varieties of Yoshino have a paler pink center, sometimes even a bit yellowish.
The cherry blossom collection from Atelier Shinji Ginza really pays tribute to Japan’s national flower. The earrings and necklaces are made with solid Britannia Silver, then plated with 23 karat gold, which is then scraped off and crafted into elegant pieces of cherry blossom jewelry.
Know where your flowers come from! Flower Says bracelets list the source of their cherry blossom bracelets. This one is made with cherry blossoms from Osaka.
? 2. Weeping Cherry Blossoms (枝垂桜)
The trees with sweeping pink flowers have cherry blossoms too. These trees are called weeping cherry trees. Strands of blossoms on soft branches called shidarezakura swaying in the wind create a scene like no other. They bloom slightly earlier than Yoshinos.
Dangling necklaces, hairpins and earrings are all ideal representations of the weeping cherry blossoms.
? 3. Yae Cherry Blossoms (八重桜)
These full, lush flowers are often mistaken for something other than cherry blossoms, but they are cherry blossoms indeed! These cherry blossoms with more than five petals are the Yae cherry blossoms (yaezakura). They bloom slightly later than Yoshino, and the variety was made quite popular by the Japanese Drama, Yae no Sakura starring Haruka Ayase.
Miss Paranoid makes yae cherry blossoms with translucent lush layers of petals that refracts the light for a dazzling effect. (Also available in white, red, and even blue!)
Designer Anmitsu Yuuka uses fabric to express the rich layers of yaezakura in her traditional Japanese kanzasi hair accessories.
? 4. Nighttime Cherry Blossom
Every style of cherry blossoms has its own significance. Thus, the beautiful nighttime cherry blossom has its own name: yozakura.
Against the deep golden evening lights, cherry blossoms would let out a completely different violet shade.
Artier attempts to capture the mesmerizing transformations of cherry blossom from daytime to nighttime using materials such as shells, metallic lamé fabric, and Swarovski crystals.
Last but not least, imagine yourself sitting under falling cherry blossom petals.
This is Odin Art’s concept art for this cute Fuji Mountain handbag where you can move and pin the cherry blossom petals wherever you like.
Now, with a better appreciation for the different faces of the cherry blossom, you can enjoy whatever sakura spring has to offer!
