But in Japan, this important holiday lasts until January 3rd. The extra days leave room for a peaceful, mindful approach to ring in the new year, with bell-ringing and shrine rituals, along with national TV shows and the lazy bone\u2019s favorite \u201cheater table\u201d\u2014kotatsu.<\/p>\n<p>Is this, in fact, how our Japanese editor Yoko spent her New Year? While we had fleeting <a href=\"https:\/\/en.pinkoi.com\/magz\/list?tag=christmas\">holiday<\/a> celebrations, Yoko headed home to rural Kyoto to celebrate the biggest holiday in Japan: New Year, or <em>Shougatsu<\/em>. Personally, my favorite thing is to watch a special TV program called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/K%C5%8Dhaku_Uta_Gassen\">Ko-haku Utagassen<\/a>\u201d (meaning \u201cred and white singing battle\u201d). I like to watch this seasonal program and sing together with my family.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">What else do you do on New Year\u2019s Eve?<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.pinkoi.com\/product\/JCGPQsME\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Chopsticks and sake, rice and tea\" external_source=\"1\" height=\"416\" onerror=\"imgerror(this)\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/13g5FxM9tsSiWNgbwuCfhW4nQNr6c069H4HVEGgeD9OESitg7qQpCxs-QygenC7ywkAAaL1x2IVP_kL6iEnIOHkEXhihJsXb4KSE2zJh-u28VygP1UVy6CPA0MMyb3Ftr-FJvEFE\" width=\"624\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Eating <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toshikoshi_soba\">toshikoshi soba<\/a><\/em>! We eat \u201ctoshikoshi soba\u201d, which means \u201cyear-crossing soba noodles\u201d, to wish for a long lasting life. My mother makes this soba delicacy every year. I like tempura soba the most!<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Cleaning is also big deal on NYE. Once we\u2019re in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinkoi.com\/search?q=kotatsu\">kotatsu<\/a>, it\u2019s <em>very<\/em> hard to come out. On a New Year\u2019s Day, we go to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinkoi.com\/search?q=shrine\">shrine<\/a> and wish for health, happiness, and so on at <em>hatsumoude<\/em>. Nowadays, many people use email; however, I like to use cards printed on paper!<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Japanese new year's card for the year of the dog\" external_source=\"1\" height=\"468\" onerror=\"imgerror(this)\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/PWt2LVIS-62KTQJmFbBhdVnqyXju9LTleulNsjbCL-ybOZj47QpDiubJD_jBv8VKvPCMJcjxuL441jR2M-672Zor5-QYZvXzVyBw5grj1PDrKj6SFQdQzr8O0EbjLCGd-wS2k1OT\" width=\"624\"\/><br \/><span style=\"color: #888888;\">\u25b2 The year 2018 is the year of the dog!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s very cold in my hometown, so I wear warm clothes. However, some people wear <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinkoi.com\/search\/?location=JP&amp;q=kimono\">kimono<\/a> when going out on New Year\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" external_source=\"1\" height=\"468\" onerror=\"imgerror(this)\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/nMxxxSyAvV8xguIiI11umqbQtLUpehYFss2-FzFQ34cVXgXLhQNLJxkaweb08YxIcP72jWZIUfEza-XDKcEBhK_nN8R1gQryQz5OfbYc0_sf2Sh9ZH6HbahrbKLcUNf64D9v8FeE\" width=\"624\"\/><br \/><span style=\"color: #888888;\">\u25b2 The refreshing morning sun over <em>kadomatsu<\/em>\u2014New Year\u2019s gate evergreens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">That feels very spiritual! What else do you do on New Year\u2019s Day?<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When I was a child, I looked forward to getting otoshidamas (Japanese red envelopes). However, now I watch <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manzai\">comedy shows on TV<\/a>,\u00a0because in Japan, we think \u201cNew Year\u2019s Day is the key of the year\u201d and \u201dFortune comes in through a merry gate\u201d, so I watch that TV program and laugh a lot!<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Yoko and grandmother at home in Kyoto for Japanese New Year, Shougatsu.\" external_source=\"1\" height=\"468\" onerror=\"imgerror(this)\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/T9A2gDKVGBVr0f9Eo_GnwadRpcZaTDFD-ORLFm6znqfh9ODyn_PSmSHCRW8hW-6ZZJXtYXwOIezHkH-wgFT6_rOKZ8DfM-ZD2fJvnbX0DbSpldBkqjPL-RA9hFKtCP-T28Dm9BVE\" width=\"624\"\/><br \/><span style=\"color: #888888;\">\u25b2 Yoko\u2019s grandmother is 92 years old!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">Finally, what is your wish for the new year, Yoko?<\/h2>\n<p>Last year, through working on <a href=\"https:\/\/jp.pinkoi.com\/magz\">Pinkoi Zine<\/a>, I met many people who were working hard to do new things in new ways. It encouraged me very much because they don\u2019t limit themselves to the traditional standards in Japan; they wanted to pave their own way. So this year, I\u2019d like to try to get out of my comfort zone as well, to try new things and discover a hidden passion.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">First, travel! I will go to a place I\u2019ve never been. Second, I will meet new people whom I\u2019ve never met. Third, I will keep writing and sharing things people didn\u2019t know before. Also, exercise, reading, waking up early&#8230;..I say these ones every year though. ;P<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">What are your new year wishes? After joining Yoko for her Japanese new year celebration, hopefully everyone feels as refreshed as we do.
